Bio

Tanya Morgan
Tanya Morgan is a rap group.  More than that, they’re a great rap group as evidenced by the acclaim they’ve received from the likes of Billboard, Vibe, SPIN, XXL Magazine, XLR8R, Los Angeles Times, The Onion, NY Magazine and a bevy of other press outlets who have praised the group throughout the duration of their career.  "Tanya Morgan are like the sons of De La Soul -- soulful, stressed, effortlessly smart flows, intricate production, the whole package," says SPIN Music Editor Charles Aaron.

Hailing from both Brooklyn and Cincinnati, Tanya Morgan formed on the message boards of Okayplayer.com in 2003 when Donwill, Ilyas Nashid and Von Pea were all solo artists trading demos and beat tapes.  The three MCs decided to collaborate for a one-off project and settled on the name Tanya Morgan - an inside joke to trick hip-hop crate-diggers and sample-searchers into thinking the record was an old-school soul singer.  After their debut album, Moonlighting, was endorsed by the likes of ?uestlove in 2006 and was received enthusiastically by fans, Tanya Morgan decided to keep working together and keep the name.  In the wake of Moonlighting’s critical success, the group released its follow-up, 2009’s Brooklynati which saw the group reach more fans and beguile more journalists as it was widely regarded as one of the year’s best hip hop releases.

Since Brooklynati, the group has reformed with Ilyas moving on to focus on his solo material and video production while Von Pea and Donwill continue to tour as Tanya Morgan, supporting the group’s classic material as well as the members’ first solo releases: Donwill’s Don Cusack In High Fidelity and Von Pea’s Pea’s Gotta Have It, both released in 2010.  2011 will see more tour dates and work on the group’s third full-length album, titled Y**Y**.

Check out my acting debut in this short film directed by my friend Nicolas Heller. It’s about a stolen camera that keeps getting passed from one person to the next (sorta like moonlighting but not like that at all) and its pretty dope. Spread it around! My performance is Oscar worthy!

I’d say one of the best things about traveling on tour is all of the access to food that you have. And yeah while there are some great restaurants out there there is something to be said about an awesome rest stop.

Im already the type of dude who absolutely has to go into a gas station and buy shit every time we stop so a gas station with variety is just that more amazing. The trucker stops with showers and all that shit usually have pretty ridiculous stuff in there too but that’s all non food related.

On the local tip i love when you find a brand of chips that don’t exist anywhere else. I’m certain that much like sneakers food companies make shit that only drops in certain regions and probably specific chains. Endless possibilities son, endless.

Then you have those snacks that just last you the whole trip by accident because it was cheaper to buy a big bag or you forgot they were in the rear seat pocket. Snack magic!

Currently i’m on a rotation of Milky Way Dark, beef jerky discs (shits be a quarter a piece! BARGAIN) and Flamin Hot Cheetos. It used to be all about Haribo but Europe kinda took all the gummi out of my system. I’ve figured that this rotation is the best bang for my buck and gives me a balance of sweet and salty with the right textures in the mix. There is a science to this stuff.

As far as tour goes Reno was cool and we had fun. Some very interesting times were had indeed but ill save that for some other time. The night ended at the nugget where everyone except me had an awful awful burger. You know what’s really awful? Sauce. That shit sucks and it was all over the burger. No thanks.

This post should explain why I brought a jump rope with me for this run. To my credit I used it yesterday. We got an off night tonight so we are headed to Stockton to chill. Catch y’all in a few.

(I still hate ketchup but just needed a picture and took the first one I saw)

The homie Playdough just dropped a video for his single “No Angels” and its a really great looking clip. Click play and if you like what you hear scan these tourdates and come out to see us perform in a city near you!

While we were over at Stadium Red working on the album with 6th Sense our friends from Blow Hip Hop TV dropped by and chopped it up with us. If you want to be caught up to speed on what we have been up to in the studio check it out!

The song says he did it just to watch the guy die and I know its not nice to talk down on towns you are playing but for the life of me I can’t figure out what there is to do here that doesn’t involve a casino. Maybe he shot the dude just so he could have something to do cus that sounds like some supreme bored nigga shit right there. This is becoming a weird tangent.
I also don’t know anybody that lives here so that could be the reason why I haven’t ever really got to do much outside of drink and take pictures of the Reno sign. I did stumble upon a pretty cool river while looking for food this morning but other than that its dead around these parts.

I need somebody to sell me on Reno. There has got to be a local out there somewhere that is going to read this and be like ‘oh shit you can’t talk bad about my city’ and when that thought crosses your mind leave a comment to help me fall in love with this place.

** this post was spans a few days because I couldn’t get the pictures to upload and got caught up actually being on tour. I’ll keep it mor consistent from now on.

Man America really is a beautiful country. I don’t mean that in a way where other places aren’t as good looking but when u are driving thru the pacific northwest it’s kinda hard not to notice.

If you didn’t know we are back on the road again but this time it’s stateside. This first leg has been dubbed “the dirty angels tour” and it’s Tanya Morgan, Pigeon John, Cookbook and Playdough. The first show was last night in Seattle and it was a nice way to start. Along with some cool as fans Jake One and J Pinder stopped by to check us out and it’s always nice to see the homies.

Today is an off day so we are headed to the next city to chill and plot on Beaverton as usual. Hopefully I’ll get a donut and find a place to buy mother’s day stuff to send off.

I did something different on this run and brought a jump rope to try and work out with every day. We don’t have the budget for buses and basketball courts just yet so that will have to do. Especially when you drink as much alcohol and eat as bad as we do on the road I gotta at least try to battle the bulge but let’s see how far this attempt at a healthy lifestyle shit goes.

*days later*

So we rocked the shit outta Portland and even made our way to Beverton aka my Mecca. I ended up scoring a pair of Roshe Runs thanks to the homie Mark and my Adidas connect held me all the way down with the LDRS Forums. Id consider that a huge win and now my problem is how to travel with all of this shit. I’ll probably end up mailing it to myself.

Portland is officially planted firmly in my favorite cities list. Id say it’s #3 right now and I never have a bad time out there.

We are currently on a 10 hour drive to Reno and I’m pretty tired but don’t know how to sleep in a moving vehicle so I’m up. This is where the tour really begins for me because in Portland we stayed with our surrogate family.

I’m gonna try and nap now.

Elucid may not be the most visible dude online but he sure has been busy offline. I just stumbled across this link in his twitter feed of a project he’s featured on alongside Raashan Ahmad, TiRon and Ayomari. Not much other info on this one but with a cast like that it’s well worth a listen.

I finally got around to checking out the incredible Hawthorne Headhunters ‘Myriad of Now’ LP today and in the middle of being blown away by how flat out amazing it was I noticed a familiar voice in the mix. Von Pea pops up on Fairweather and trades a few bars with Black Spade and Haz Solo. You can check the song out here but more importantly check the album when you get a chance!

In my very brief search online this was the only picture of Von Pea and Blu together. Consequently it was also the night that I exchanged info with Blu again which led to a fateful text a few days later that spawned this remix. Shit’s jammin ain’t it?

Unless you live under a rock (or don’t really follow my group like that) you know that the trio is now a duo and Ilyas now goes by the name i-El. Here is the first single from i-El’s upcoming debut LP. From what he told me this is just a taste of what to expect from him and he’s delving deeper into the sound that he’s been hinting at since before you guys even knew who any of us were. Check it out stay tuned for his new stuff!
